I placed a few sunflower seeds at a time in my then two-year-old daughter Ariel’s tiny, outstretched hand while she walked contentedly beside me through the mall.
Without warning, she flung herself on the floor, arms and legs flailing like a crab on its back in distress. “Gimmie de whole bag! Gimmie de whole bag!” she screamed.
Being nine months pregnant and living in Massachusetts didn’t leave me many options to rectify the situation. So I took a deep breath and continued my unhurried stroll while keeping an eye on her over my shoulder. My steps and her cries echoed through the mall corridor.
Sometimes we treat God, our heavenly Father, in like manner. We throw tantrums because we want or feel we deserve more, or the things we desire aren’t happening fast enough for our liking. “Why isn’t my ministry, my platform growing?” “Why did they get that opportunity and not me?” How quickly we forget His past leadings and turn from gratitude for what God has placed in our hands to demands and discontent.
Realizing her attempts to get her way had failed, Ariel’s cries subsided, and she scrambled to her feet and caught up with me. I met her gaze with a raised eyebrow and placed a few sunflower seeds in her hand.
Ariel desired a healthy snack, and I was happy to give her portions she could handle so she wouldn’t choke. God does not change the course He laid because of our childish and ill-informed demands. However, He is gracious to welcome us when we return to walk in step with Him. He portions according to our maturity and the gifts and calling He’s given us.
Even when our desires are good and part of God’s plan, the road to our desired place and destiny often includes delays and setbacks. God uses the journey to prepare us for our destination, to equip and train us to become more compassionate and able ministers. We can rest and trust that our Good Father blesses and dispenses what we need and leads according to His will, way, and timing.
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
The Lord gives grace and glory;
He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.”
(Psalm 84:11 NASB)
Addendum: I’m happy to say that Ariel is now a beautiful, well-mannered, and even-tempered young woman and mom. ❤
