Forgive

Tattoo_it_on_your_Heart_Rachael_M_Colby-Forgive

Relationship problems are the result of sin played out in that forum. Sin is the culprit- our own brokenness, the gap in our relationship with Christ- where we are, as opposed to where Christ would have us to be.

Sometimes I catch myself praying for God to change circumstance and behavior when what is needed is for God to change hearts. Our actions and reactions are merely a symptom of the problem. When God transforms a heart, the change will spill out to influence all circumstance and relationships. We need to treat the root, not the fruit, if we want true and lasting change.

When I focus on my unmet needs, nobody’s needs are met, because no one is serving. I’m just having a self serving pity party. If I want to see change, then I must change, and the only way that will happen is if I let Christ have His way in me. I must give Jesus the reins of my heart.

“Will the tears ever stop, Lord?”

You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book? Psalms 56:8 (NKJV)

“Sometimes I think that must be a really big bottle, Lord.”

But to forgive the incessant provocations of life- to keep on forgiving the the bossy mother-in-law, the bullying husband, the nagging wife, the selfish daughter, the deceitful son- how can we do it? Only, I think, by remembering where we stand, by meaning what we say in our prayers each night,“forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us.” -C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Forgiving means letting go of offenses, not holding it against the person. It means wiping slate clean, canceling the debt, not retaliating.

What if I dared to speak the words I’ve never said?

What if I set them free from the captivity of silence?

Would the chains of pain be broken?

Or would the weight of regret be too great?

For once let loose I cannot call them back.

 “Lord…?”

He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.Isaiah 53:7 (NKJV)

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, Matthew 5:44 (NKJV)

There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven-  …A time to be silent and a time to speak. Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 7 (NASB)

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.Psalms 141:3 (NKJV)

Extending forgiveness requires humility, putting aside my pride, emotions. It means valuing relationships and being right with God over my rights.

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”

Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”Matthew 18:21-22

Life is too short and eternity is too near to be easily offended by those I am called to love. Bitterness is like barbed wire around a heart. The walls I build to protect my heart are the same walls which keep Christ and His healing out.

Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.Ephesians 4:31-32

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.Psalms 147:3 (NKJV)

Rather than trying to fix others, I need to fix my relationship with Christ. When I let Jesus overhaul my inward man, the core of me, many of my relationship problems resolve themselves. He is the restorer.

Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Matthew 7:4 (NKJV)

As the old song goes, “It’s not my brother, not my sister, but it’s me, oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer.”

I’m guilty, Lord.

Here I am

Forgive me

Heal my divided, renegade heart.

Deliver me from myself, my sin.

Change me, Jesus

I long for one accord with You

But I fail; I fall

Remember,

I am dust, Lord

Help me

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. II Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; Philippians 1:6 (NKJV)

You are The Way

Have your way in me

Burn up the dross

Make me pure

I want to love like You

Refine me until I reflect You

Jesus, my heart’s desire and delight,

Song of my soul

Form Yourself in me

I want to be one with You

Standing In The Need Of Prayer (Live)

I must extend forgiveness if I want to be forgiven, even if the other person is wrong and unrepentant. This requires a supernatural enabling.

How I forgive others = God’s grace extended to me in forgiveness

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15

To be Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because Christ forgave the inexcusable in you. -C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Many times what God asks of us is impossible. He knows we will fail in our own strength. He want us to acknowledge our brokenness, failures, our need, so He can change and empower us.

Matthew West – Forgiveness (Lyrics)

Jesus didn’t just die for those who would accept Him. He paid the penalty for all the sins of those He knew would reject Him too. The sins of all humanity were borne on the shoulders of the great I Am.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

Jesus did His part. He paid the price and provides forgiveness- it’s available up front, but we must choose to accept or reject it.

We must let go of unforgiveness, of sin, if we want to receive the forgiveness He offers. We can’t hold on to both.

The reason people mistreat others is because of what’s broken in them. If I focus on their need for healing, the injustices I receive will be so much easier to bear. When I really pray for someone, not just for my vindication or relief, I find God gives me the heart, the grace, to forgive them. And besides, I need forgiveness too.

Regardless of the behavior of others, if I forgive them and yield to God’s refining of my heart and character through the circumstances in my life, I will be rewarded with a closer walk with Jesus and the peace that comes from a right heart.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him. Psalms 28:7 (NKJV)

Love is forgiving. Love is serving. We are commanded to love. When I set my heart and mind to love and serve others as Christ calls me to, even if it is unrequited, Jesus will fulfill me. There is joy and contentment when my heart rests in Jesus’ hands and I walk in His ways.

Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5:7 (NASB)

Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Matthew 5:8 (NKJV)

Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9 (NKJV)

The Story Behind the Song, Forgiveness –Matthew West

Robin & Spencer’s Story

On January 26 2002 my life changed forever. My son Spencer Macleod was brought into the ER where I was working as a nurse, barely clinging to life from a stab wound to the heart. He was pronounced dead fifteen minutes later. It was then that I discovered his identity. He died coming to the rescue of…Continued at:  http://spencersmom.com/the-story/

Reflections

I tried to quell the yearning for a greater something, a purpose bigger than the here and now and myself.

…we remain conscious of a desire which no natural desire will satisfy.  -C. S Lewis, The Weight of Glory

I chased all manner of both good and evil earthly pursuits, but nothing fulfilled. Not even religion. It was all vain distraction.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:11 (NKJV)

But then, He found me.

I met mercy and forgiveness on the road to grace.

Mercy withheld judgment.

Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! Micah 7:19 (NLT)

Forgiveness wiped away my transgression.

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV)

Grace translated me from servant to friend, from slave to daughter, abandoned to adored.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:15 (KJV)

Do you want this? God created you for Himself, for Heaven. That is why everything else misses the mark, just as we do.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, often referred to as Palm Sunday, is an accurate reflection of  mankind. Not just the back then mankind, but the right now mankind. It’s like an indictment to you and me how easily our hearts are turned away from the right road, the Savior. It’s frightening how a heart can go from crown Him to crucify Him in three days.

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

How often I miss the splendor of God’s glory passing by, what He is doing and calling me to, because it isn’t wrapped in the earthly trappings I expect or want. Of the people who did recognize Jesus as Messiah and greeted Him with palms and called Him King of Kings, I wonder how many had the revelation that the road led to the cross? Death before resurrection. I wonder how many walked away from Jesus then, and even now, because they didn’t look past the cost and up to see the crown, the glory, that follows obedient sacrifice and service.  Tattoo_It_On_Your_Heart_Rachael_M_Colby_I_Am_The_Guilty_Man_

Hey heart… Do you turn aside when the road goes uphill, or against your will to the place of self death and sacrifice?  Do you hold out when you are called to be poured out and lift others up to Christ?

I fall short, but Jesus is the difference maker. Yes, my Creator is my crutch.  I like to lean on Him. He is my healer, redeemer, restorer. He is the Way maker. He wants to be yours too. Not just for a day, but for every day, in the day to day. He cares about the details.

Come as you are and let Jesus make you into what you were made to be.

A Sobering Thought:

All day long we are, in some degree,  helping each other to one or other of these destinations. (Heaven or Hell)  – C. S.  Lewis Mere Christianity

C. S. Lewis and the Bible speak of our lifestyle and of sharing the Gospel, of encouraging and strengthening our Christian brothers and sisters. We must spend time in His Light, His Word, His presence, if we are to reflect Him.

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature Mark 16:15 (NKJV)

Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. Luke 14:23 (NKJV)

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Matthew 10:27 (NIV)

Here is a highway. This is my rooftop. Hello, world! Can you hear me? Do you know my Jesus?

Because He is risen

I have hope

I know Him

I can come boldly before His throne

This world is not my home

It’s just the road to where I’m going

And I do not walk alone

I do not fear death

Because He is risen

I have been translated

From dead in my sin

To alive in Christ

From slave

To set free and daughter of the King

From bound for Hell

To Heaven is my home

He is risen indeed

But Jesus isn’t just my fire escape; He is my passion, my reward.

The proper rewards are not so much tacked on to the activity for which they are given, but are the activity itself in consummation.  -C. S.  Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Consummation- the act of consummating; completion. The circle is a symbol of never-ending continuity, eternity. The rainbow around God’s throne in Heaven is a circle. Heaven is coming full circle into the eternal destiny and reward we were made for, the fulfillment of the vow, the promise Christ made to His Church, His bride.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38 (NKJV)

I am a  riverbed whose banks cannot contain the rushing water. He rains on me, He reigns in me. I overflow. He compels me.

You don’t have to be a victim of your failures, shortcomings, or circumstances. Every obstacle, every failure, every defect, every unmet need is a chance for Jesus to move on your behalf, to prove Himself in your life, and bring Him glory. Your defeat is Jesus’ opportunity to bring victory if you give yourself to Him. He is the God of the turn around, the God of a new beginning.

Romancing The Rock

rachael_m_colby_tattoo_it_on_your_heart_nothing_else_is_enough-003

Jesus, Friend of Sinners-

There is a big difference between placing an order with God and taking the time to get to know Him. Jesus calls us friends.

No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. John 15:15 NKJV

Friends don’t only talk about themselves- they sow to invest in the other person. The Creator of the universe calls us friends and wants to let us in on His plans for our lives. Every day. But I don’t always stay still long enough to hear what He has for me.

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: Matthew 7:24 NKJV

He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. Luke 6:48 NKJV

Sometimes I am offended by how others treat me, their ungratefulness, insensitivity or lack of willingness to listen, or just slow down and spend some time together. Then I realize that’s how I have been treating God. Their treatment of me is sometimes God’s object lesson to me. “Hey,” Jesus says. “You do that to me.”

Praying amiss is not only praying for wrong things but it’s also praying for right things but with a wrong motive.

You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. ‭‭James‬ ‭4:3‬ ‭NASB‬‬

I prayed for someone to change and God asked me, “Are you praying for them to change because it will make your life easier, or because you really care for their soul and want me to touch their lives? Are you praying for yourself, or for them?”

Jesus calls me to love others in their imperfection. That’s how He loves us.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; Psalms 139:23 NKJV

Dr. Jesus-

Sometimes I’m broken and need fixing. Jesus offers me the prescription but I don’t always pick it up, or I only take some of it. Sometimes the prescription is delivered in prayer and sometimes it’s found in the Word of God.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NKJV

Sometimes I try to go on my own strength, ignore the warning signs and wait until the pain is intense before I remember to ask for help. When the Great Physician tells me I need heart surgery, I say okay, but I run off before He can do His work. “Later.” I say.

Do you know what “I’m busy right now, God,” means? It’s saying “There is something more important right now than receiving what you have to say to me, God.” And there isn’t. Ever. We need to stay on the operating table long enough for Jesus to do the work.

I am altered when I place my heart on the altar of repentance and receive His forgiveness. Jesus is the remedy.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalms 51:10 NKJV

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26 NKJV

Prayer is the altar. A repentant heart, thanksgiving and praise are my offerings. He is Holy.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. Psalms 100:4 NLT

In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy. 1 Timothy 2:8 NLT

Romancing The Rock-

I am insatiable. Nothing this world has to offer totally satisfies. Even the good things eventually run out, get old, or let us down. When the going is rough, He is the only true solace for my soul. Jesus is enough. I am complete in Him.

He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. Psalms 62:6 NKJV

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV

rachael_m_colby_tattoo_it_on_your_heart_lord_i_am_thirsty

Imagine a date where you showed up, tossed a list of what you wanted from your date at them, and then left without even partaking of the meal.

“Look,” He says, “I’ve prepared a table for you.”

He invites me to drink in His presence, to feast at His banquet table. He invites me to commune with Him, to enjoy His company. The menu: Lamb of God, Bread of Life and Living Water

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35 NKJV

Jesus calls the Church His bride. This is a divine romance. It’s The Prince and the pauper. I have nothing to offer, but He wants me anyway. So here I am, Lord.

In my destitution, He has clothed me in His righteousness. I am my beloved’s and He is mine. His banner over me is love.

Are We Actually Praying?

tattoo_it_on_your_heart_rachael_m_colby_are_you-actually_praying

I am guilty of referring  to prayer as working or not working; as if I’m turning the key in a car or flipping a light switch. Prayer is the privilege of communing with the all powerful, holy, benevolent God. He responds according to His will and time. The trouble is, I don’t always know what my needs are are or what is priority in God’s eyes. He is the Good Father, who loves me, knows my needs and always meets them. My vision is limited; He sees all.

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:19 NASB

Yes, God wants us to bring all our requests to Him. He is our provider, but He created  us to enjoy a personal relationship with Him.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6 -7 NASB

Rachael_m_Colby_tattoo_it_on_Your_Heart_Casual_Acquaintance

Notice, the scripture says to approach with thanksgiving, not demanding our way, and the promise to us is His peace. The priceless gift of His peace is not dependent on circumstances. It is the result of trusting God enough to leave our lives, our will, in His hands. Shouldn’t prayer be more about developing our relationship with Jesus than getting something from Him? What would happen if  our prayers  were a little less about gimmie God and more of, give me God. What if sometimes we just sought Him for Himself?

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. Psalms 16:11 NASB

Reasons Aren’t Excuses

DSC_0895-001Reasons aren’t excuses. God is fully aware of all my circumstances, but He doesn’t believe in situational ethics. He wants me to keep my attitude and responses in alignment with His Word, regardless of who is right or wrong.

I hear Jesus say, “Do you want Me to defend you, or do you want to defend yourself?” He lets me choose. Why do I  struggle with this? Why do I rush in and react, instead of waiting on God?

I know The Lord  is my defender,  and if I keep my heart right and stay out of the way, He will fight for me. In His time, He will right the wrong and truth shall prevail.

“But Lord,” I say, “this is hard, I just can’t seem to do this. I keep tripping over myself.”

Life is hard. It is bigger than I. I can’t bear it on my own. I’m nothing on my own, but His Word says,

My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.     2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV

Jesus knows me, with all my failings, and loves me anyway. He expects me to fall. That’s how I’ll learn to walk. When I call, He hears my cry. He picks me up and says, “Lean on me. Try again.”

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.     ‭Psalms 141:3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.‭‭     Proverbs‬ ‭4:23‬ ‭NKJV

Mama,
Don’t you know Jesus loves your children
Even more than you?

Pound the gates of Heaven, Mama
Pray without ceasing

Know the God of Heaven, inclines to your cry
He shares your passion for restoration of the prodigal child

So go ahead and cry Mama
But, make every tear a prayer
An offering of hope and heart

because your prayers are the rain
On the soil of your prodigal’s heart

Your prayers are the rain
On the soil of your prodigal’s heart

Your prayers are the rain
On the soil of your prodigal’s heart…
