Pastor Appreciation, Halloween & The Reformation

October is Pastor Appreciation Month!

Don’t forget to show your pastors and their wives and families how much you appreciate them. But remember, it doesn’t have to be the designated month to show appreciation to your ministers and others in your life.

My pastor issued a challenge to our church this week to make a commitment to go out of our way to edify one another from now until the end of the year. He is hoping by then we will have developed a habit of it. I’m hoping you will consider accepting the challenge too.

For those who started following my blog less than a year ago, or any who wish to share my 2016 sixteen part series of interviews with pastors and wives from around the world, here are some excerpts and the links to a few of the posts.

Part 1:

What has being a pastor/ pastor’s wife cost you?

It has cost me nothing yet everything. There is no price too great when serving the Lord.   -Pastor Wayne Shaffer,  New Life AG, Altoona PA

My will for the will of God.  -Pastor Patrick Jordan, The Door CFM,  Jamaica West Indies

What do you see as the biggest threat to the church today

People who like to wear the Christian badge, but that’s it. It’s part of their Facebook profile, but not part of their personal profile. They are not converted. -Pastor Chip Ganiear,  Victory Chapel CFM, Cape Cod, MA

Part 14 rachael_m_colby_tattoo_it_on_your_heart_what-_if-jesus-_held-_you_to_the_standards

I felt like he could look right through me. I couldn’t stand him….  My pastor is not perfect; he’s just a man, as are all preachers. But he’s the man God provided to shepherd my soul….  I’m not speaking of blind following. Pastor worshipers don’t do well in their walk with God, because sooner or later they wake up and realize the god they created has failed them, or offended them and they derail as their reference was on the man and not the God the man represents. Likewise, those who are like a horse who shies from his groomer when his bridle is reached for, refusing to be led, don’t fare well…  Continued at: I Call Him Pastor

Part 16:

What do you believe is the biggest threat to the church today?

Tolerance. Christians should be discriminating. They should exercise sound judgment; not no judgment. -Anonymous

What do you believe is the biggest threat to the church today?

Cultural relativism,

Biblical illiteracy,

Prayerlessness,

Fat baby syndrome from so little exercise,

Lack of spiritual curiosity,

Gun shy evangelists. -Pastor Bruce Hanlon, Forrestdale Church, Sandwich MA

If you could tell your church anything about yourself, your family, or anything else what would it be? What’s on your heart?

I love the LORD Jesus and He is my rock and salvation, that what you “feel” in your heart might not be what is real in God’s word, that truth conquers lies and light dispels darkness and there is no sin that cannot be overcome by grace. This I would tell them… and so much more. -Pastor Michael Duncan, Author, Speaker, Pastor, Mountain View Baptist Church, Darrington WA

Halloween and the Reformation and Some Freebies

Did you know that the day known by many as Halloween is also Reformation Day? On October 31st 1517, a young Augustinian monk by the name of Martin Luther,  posted his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, challenging several Roman Catholic practices and doctrines. This year, 2017, marks the 500th anniversary of this event that sparked the Protestant Reformation.

The movie,  Luther by Torchlighters, tells His story and includes a documentary on Luther and the history of the Reformation. It was made for families and recommended for ages 8 and up.

Pastor’s wife and writer Rachel Schmoyer is sharing her free #Halloween #gospel kids tract for you to distribute. You can access the PDF download here:  https://rachelschmoyerwrites.com/2017/10/06/trick-or-treat-gospel-tract/

Please feel free to print and distribute my handout for Halloween also. Here is the PDF for it: Scarier tract

Scarier

Do you know what’s scarier than Halloween? What’s scarier than ghosts, goblins, witches, and horror movies? Scarier than your worst day ever. Do you know what’s scarier than the recent tragic headlines?

It’s spending eternity separated from the God who loves you so much. He put on human flesh, was born, and lived, and gave His life on the cross to pay the penalty for your sin.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (NKJV)

Jesus was born to die so we could live. He rose victorious over Hell, so you don’t have to go there, so you can know Him, to offer you salvation and Heaven as your eternal home.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (NKJV)

Do You Know Him? Do you want this?

Salvation is there for the asking. If you’re ready, you can pray like this:

“Jesus, I believe you shed your blood, died on the cross, and rose from the dead for me. I repent of my sin. I ask you to forgive me and come into my heart. Help me to live for you in Jesus’ name, amen.”

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

If you prayed, it is important that you find a church home that preaches the full gospel, so you can grow in your faith and have the fellowship and support of other believers. Echoes (Nepal Mission Trip Report)

Yes! I’m almost finished with my Nepal article. It will be posted early this coming week.

I sent the following to a friend as I stayed up working on the Nepal article last night. Prayer is my therapy. Sometimes I pray on paper.

Bit by Bit

Tipity-tap, tipity-tap.

Bit by bit.

Just lay one word down.

Then another, and another.

Each builds upon the other.

Line on line.

I think I can, I think I can.

Help me, Jesus- Here goes.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Plinkity-plink.

Plink.

It’s 5am.

Tipity-tap, tipity-tap, tipity-tap… 🙂

Hey, writer, do you frequently pull late nights and all-nighters too?

To my friends who faithfully pray for me as I write—Thank you. I need you. I feel your prayers.

*Echoes (Nepal Mission Trip Report) will be posted this coming week.

Not Fiddling with Religion

“Let’s quit fiddling with religion and do something to bring the world to Christ.” – Billy Sunday

Rachael_M_Colby_Tattoo_It_On_Your_Heart_Not_Fiddling_with_ReligionThe preaching of the gospel and salvation of souls is the primary focus and call of the Gospel. It is biblical that all else done in the name of the Church, as representatives of Jesus, should be done with this ultimate purpose in mind.

The Great Commission:

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15 (NKJV)

Many organizations start out with this focus, but lose it as they get overwhelmed by attempting to meet the the endless physical needs of the people they are serving with their humanitarian work. This is something to be mindful of, so as to stay balanced and faithful to Jesus’ mandate.

The Bible Says:

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Mark 8:36 (NKJV)

But the Gospel is not a buffet. We don’t get to pick and choose what we like in the Bible and ignore the rest. It’s all or nothing; we must ingest the whole thing.

Look:

“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 (NKJV)

“..and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?” James 2:16 (NKJV)

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’”  Matthew 25:34-44

Pray, Send, Plant, Establish, Support, Nurture:

Neither our home church, nor Adventures in Missions are organizations with a “drop a bag of rice and run” mentality. But rather, both believe and are are invested  in planting, helping establish, supporting, and nurturing ministries that are dedicated to planting themselves in the nations among the people they are serving. We must seek to serve both the spiritual and physical needs where we are called, with a hand up, not just a hand out.

We each have different callings and how we fulfill them will play out differently for each of us. It is Biblical to serve first in our home churches and communities, but there are different seasons in which some are called to go; some to stay and send. But even those who stay and send get to go, as the sender is linked by their investment of prayer, finances, and encouragement to every impact the missionary makes for Jesus in the lives of other people.

In July my 18 year old daughter, Abigail, leaves on a month long mission trip for Nepal with Adventures in Missions. In spite of turning 18 and wanting a car, she has chosen to forego a month of pay from her summer job to go and work unpaid serving the Nepali people. I love her heart and her boldness. Abby’s team will need prayer support for their endeavor. As of today, Abigail also still needs to raise another $1,861 for her mission trip.

You can visit her website to learn more, and, if you feel led, there is also a link to donate here: https://abbysmission.wordpress.com/

Or you may go directly to her donations page on The Adventures in Missions website here: https://www.adventures.org/give/donate.asp?giveto=partFund&selected=Passport&desc=Abigail%20Colby&appeal_id=COLBYABBY

We must each ask, “What would you have me to do Lord, to be your hands and feet and voice, to demonstrate your love and reach others with the Gospel?”

Tattoo it on your heart. Walk it out in your skin.

Why?

by Abigail Colby

“Why?” is a question I hear way too often.

“Why do you want to go on a mission trip so badly?”

“Why do you care?”

I never understand their whys. As a Christian we are commanded to care for people and share God’s love with as many as possible. If I work hard enough I know I can raise enough money to go on a mission trip. Even those out of town outreaches on Saturdays- I don’t have anything to do a lot of Saturdays, so, of course I’m going to go. “Why not?” I find myself saying so often. The opportunity is there, and it makes no sense not to take it.

No, I don’t think I’m too young. There is no such thing as too young to serve in the best way possible and do God’s will for your life.

“Do these things when you’re old enough to appreciate it,” they say.

I know I’m capable of appreciating it now. God has put an overwhelming love in my heart for people now, so why not put it to use now? If I waited until I was older, what would I do now? I’m not waiting until I’m older because I’m capable of making a difference now.

I’m not doing this to have a good experience, or to better myself, but to better other people. Until I have ministered God’s word to people who can give me nothing in return, I have not lived.

“God, please use me now. My life is yours; do as you please with it.”

A Letter from Abby’s Mom

by Rachael M Colby

People ask me, “How can you send your children away?”

“Why do allow your children to go to these far away and dangerous places?”

“Aren’t you afraid? Won’t you miss them?”

Here’s my answer. Yes. But I would Rather give my children to the cause of Christ than have the world steal them away.

There is really nowhere safe in the world anymore. Our older daughter Anna went on a three month mission trip to Kenya in 2013. Her team of thirteen girls was sent to serve in one of the most unattractive and unsafe towns in the country. The terrorist attack took place while they were there- but it took place in one of the nicest and seemingly safest areas.

When Abby went to visit and help out family who are missionaries in Lithuania, we didn’t book her on the lesser known airline which had a day layover in an unstable country. She did reach her destination unharmed. But a few weeks later, it was that same reputable airline that she had traveled on, Lufthansa, that was intentionally crashed by the copilot into the alps, thus killing all on board.  My heart breaks for the people impacted by these tragedies.

So, where is safe? The only safe place is in Christ. We  really just have to be ready. Safe is in the hands and will of Jesus. Safe is a right heart with God.

Which heart should I feed? She is young. She was only 16 when she went to Swaziland and will just have turned 18 when she leaves for Nepal. I am her mom, and I see the pull of the world and our culture. I also see that little bit of edginess and that youthful lust for a little risk, a little adventure. I see her heart for people and for God, that thirst to know God more and to do something that matters. It needs expression somewhere.  So let that expression be found in  the cause of Christ.

I challenged her and asked her in 2015, “Why Swaziland? Why not somewhere closer, cheaper, and safer?”

Her response was, “It seems to be the area of greatest need. And I don’t want to go somewhere easy.”

She could spend the month of July lining her pockets with silver from a summer job and shopping at the mall with friends, or relaxing on the beach… And that would be okay. But instead, in 2015 she chose to go and serve the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a hand up to a destitute, disease stricken people in the tiny African nation of Swaziland. How could I say no to that?

This Summer, in July 2017, her desire is to go on another month long mission trip. This time it is to Nepal.

I know there are plenty of people that need the Gospel preached to them and their needs met, right here on the home front- and Abby does outreach locally. But who am I to tell Abby, or anyone else, where God is telling them to “Go ye,” if God has laid somewhere on their heart? I held her back for a year the first time.

Here’s to the little girl with the little bit of an edge to her. The little girl with the gumption to reach for a dream and follow her heart for Jesus. I love you Abby.

So, if God speaks to your heart and leads you, go ahead and hit: DONATE

God bless you, and thanks for stopping by.

Reflections

I tried to quell the yearning for a greater something, a purpose bigger than the here and now and myself.

…we remain conscious of a desire which no natural desire will satisfy.  -C. S Lewis, The Weight of Glory

I chased all manner of both good and evil earthly pursuits, but nothing fulfilled. Not even religion. It was all vain distraction.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:11 (NKJV)

But then, He found me.

I met mercy and forgiveness on the road to grace.

Mercy withheld judgment.

Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! Micah 7:19 (NLT)

Forgiveness wiped away my transgression.

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV)

Grace translated me from servant to friend, from slave to daughter, abandoned to adored.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:15 (KJV)

Do you want this? God created you for Himself, for Heaven. That is why everything else misses the mark, just as we do.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, often referred to as Palm Sunday, is an accurate reflection of  mankind. Not just the back then mankind, but the right now mankind. It’s like an indictment to you and me how easily our hearts are turned away from the right road, the Savior. It’s frightening how a heart can go from crown Him to crucify Him in three days.

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

How often I miss the splendor of God’s glory passing by, what He is doing and calling me to, because it isn’t wrapped in the earthly trappings I expect or want. Of the people who did recognize Jesus as Messiah and greeted Him with palms and called Him King of Kings, I wonder how many had the revelation that the road led to the cross? Death before resurrection. I wonder how many walked away from Jesus then, and even now, because they didn’t look past the cost and up to see the crown, the glory, that follows obedient sacrifice and service.

Hey heart… Do you turn aside when the road goes uphill, or against your will to the place of self death and sacrifice?  Do you hold out when you are called to be poured out and lift others up to Christ?

I fall short, but Jesus is the difference maker. Yes, my Creator is my crutch.  I like to lean on Him. He is my healer, redeemer, restorer. He is the Way maker. He wants to be yours too. Not just for a day, but for every day, in the day to day. He cares about the details.

Come as you are and let Jesus make you into what you were made to be.

A Sobering Thought:

All day long we are, in some degree,  helping each other to one or other of these destinations. (Heaven or Hell)  – C. S.  Lewis Mere Christianity

C. S. Lewis and the Bible speak of our lifestyle and of sharing the Gospel, of encouraging and strengthening our Christian brothers and sisters. We must spend time in His Light, His Word, His presence, if we are to reflect Him.

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature Mark 16:15 (NKJV)

Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. Luke 14:23 (NKJV)

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Matthew 10:27 (NIV)

Here is a highway. This is my rooftop. Hello, world! Can you hear me? Do you know my Jesus?

Because He is risen

I have hope

I know Him

I can come boldly before His throne

This world is not my home

It’s just the road to where I’m going

And I do not walk alone

I do not fear death

Because He is risen

I have been translated

From dead in my sin

To alive in Christ

From slave

To set free and daughter of the King

From bound for Hell

To Heaven is my home

He is risen indeed

But Jesus isn’t just my fire escape; He is my passion, my reward.

The proper rewards are not so much tacked on to the activity for which they are given, but are the activity itself in consummation.  -C. S.  Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Consummation- the act of consummating; completion. The circle is a symbol of never-ending continuity, eternity. The rainbow around God’s throne in Heaven is a circle. Heaven is coming full circle into the eternal destiny and reward we were made for, the fulfillment of the vow, the promise Christ made to His Church, His bride.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38 (NKJV)

I am a  riverbed whose banks cannot contain the rushing water. He rains on me, He reigns in me. I overflow. He compels me.

I’m preparing for departure. Are you ready?

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” I Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)

Am I Enough?

“Am I enough?” He said.

“Yes, Lord. Of course, You are enough.”

“Then stop making excuses. Whatever you lack, whatever your need, I am enough. Come to Me.”

“I am ashamed Lord. I’ve done wrong. I’ve been hiding my sin, my self.”

“I see all. Come to Me, just as you are. Let Me cover you, clothe you in My righteousness.”

“But Lord, I failed You. I failed myself, I failed others.”

“I know, but I want you”.

“I want You, Jesus. But I’m broken.”

“That’s what I’m for. Give Me yourself. Let Me make you.”

“Lord, make me whole. Make me holy and wholly Yours. You are enough, Lord. You are intoxicating.”

“Yes.” He said. “I Am. “

You don’t have to be a victim of your failures, shortcomings, or circumstances. Every obstacle, every failure, every defect, every unmet need is a chance for Jesus to move on your behalf, to prove Himself in your life, and bring Him glory. Your defeat is Jesus’ opportunity to bring victory if you give yourself to Him. He is the God of the turn around, the God of a new beginning.

Sometimes it’s like digging deep and climbing and failing and falling and finding I have landed at Jesus’ feet. But then, He reaches down, and pulls me to Himself.

God is easy to please, but hard to satisfy.

But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make sense… You thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage; but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself. – George MacDonald

God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man.

The more we get what we call “ourselves”  out of the way and let Him take us over, the more truly ourselves we become.

Nothing of you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead.     – C S Lewis, Mere Christianity

My best is a gift from Him. My worst is an opportunity for God to do miracles and testify of His grace. I bring a lot to the table for Jesus to work with. I  just keep laying all my raw material, my broken pieces, on The Workman’s  table, putting my whole self, my life, in the Master Builder’s hands.

Jesus is my pleasure, my joy,

But I am not satisfied. I want more of Him, and Him to have all of me.

I never tire of Him.

He occupies my mind.

Why, God?

“I don’t understand why innocent people, godly people, suffer… Why doesn’t God answer my prayers and bring relief?… I’m not sure God does miracles in today’s world… God gave tangible  examples before the written Word & His death on the cross, which is our ultimate Hope… The last miracle happened at the Cross, I guess… Perplexed on how a God way up in Heaven really pays attention to my, or anyone else’s life details…,” my friend said in anguish.

Life is hard. Christianity is hard. I’d rather go through life with Jesus. Life without Christianity is dismal and eternity hopeless.

When belief in God becomes difficult, the tendency is to turn away from Him; but in heaven’s name, to what?  -G K Chesterton

Life is easier when I surrender, walk in Jesus’ strength, not my own or lack thereof. He gives grace, His mercies are new every morning.

Other’s trials break my heart too, but God loves our loved ones more than we do. I promise. If they persevere, in the end, and the real end is never ending in Eternity, they will shine as gold.

I know some who are an amazing testimony for Jesus by their tenacity to hope in Christ. Their excellent spirit makes me repent of whining, get my eyes off of myself for a bit and be grateful for what I have.

Blessings on our lives bring glory to God, but oftentimes, we bring the message of hope to others as they watch Jesus walk us through struggles.

“who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”  II Corinthians 1:4 (NKJV)

Sometimes my stress has stress and the waters rage. Storm clouds gather on the horizon and the fog rolls in, but I see Him more clearly. I must fix my eyes on Jesus and on Heaven, look to Him, not at the waves, if I want to walk on water.

“Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah” Psalms 62:8 (NKJV)

God cares about the details of our lives. He sees all. He is not the orchestrator of the fallout of living in a sin filled world. Everything that occurs isn’t God’s doing or will, but if we are His, nothing can happen to us that He doesn’t allow. He is a good God.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NASB)

The Creator of all, the God  of eternity is also the God of now, for each and every one of us who cry out to him.

As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. Psalms 18:30

We only see part of the picture- a very small part. We have no idea how far reaching our prayers are on this side of eternity. We can’t see what our prayers  prevented; they hold even greater storms at bay.

Jesus still does miracles of healing and provision. But the cross marked the beginning of the greatest and ongoing miracle of all time. God in the flesh shouldered the sins of mankind, to restore us to Himself. He died so we could live. He sets us free, makes us His sons and daughters. He makes our hearts His home.

We all doubt sometimes, we all fall. We have much learning and growing and knowing to do. We can’t earn our salvation, and we don’t have to work to get miracles either. God does things in His time, for our good and His glory, which doesn’t always bring  instant relief. Joseph, David, Job, Daniel, Jesus’ death and resurrection, are examples. And, yes, we do need to pray for endurance.

For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: Hebrews 10:36 (NKJV)

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy Colossians 1:11 (NLT)

Jesus already knows how you feel and understands. Sometimes I realize I’m talking, thinking, about praying, but not actually praying. We need to talk to God. God is Holy, but I believe He prefers our honest uncensored prayers to an act, or rote religious dialogue, as long as we let Him redirect us. Pray. Listen. Watch and wait on God.

rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;Romans 12:12 (NKJV)

This isn’t Heaven. Expect setbacks. Expect failures. Expect to overcome.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Ultimately, God’s purpose for our time on Earth is to save and sanctify us so we make Heaven our home. He redeems and refines us. Jesus desires to forge and form us into his likeness. As He works on the inside, I reflect Him on the outside. We are called to be a light in the darkness, to reveal The Way to the lost so they can be found and find themselves in Him.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”  ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

God sees me and cares about my circumstances, but He is much more concerned with the positionRachael_M_Colby_Tattoo_It_On_Your_Heart_Process of my heart, the direction in which it’s heading.

What happens to me is not nearly as important as who I become in Christ  and that I fulfill the destiny He intends for me.

God does as He wills, as is needed for each person and circumstance.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Romans 8:18 (NKJV)

But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. Job 23:10

The question is, will you allow Jesus to sanctify you through your circumstances?

If all I got on this side of eternity was the forgiveness Jesus wrought on the cross, and the promise of Heaven, that would still be amazing grace and more than I deserve, but that is not “all” I get.

Jesus is with me. I do not walk alone. If it was necessary for me to go through all the heartache and hardship I have been through to have the revelation of God in my life as I do today- it is worth it. I wouldn’t change any circumstance of ease for the relationship I have with Jesus now. He is my joy. He is my friend. After almost 30 years of salvation I can testify that His presence is more tangible than any flesh and blood sitting next to me. His comfort is deep, and when I let Him hold me, I am held like no human can.

Casting Crowns – Just Be Held (Official Lyric Video)

*Dedicated to my friends who walk the valley road right now. Your pain is not in vain. You do not walk alone. Psalm 23

My prayers are with you.

Angry faces. tattoo_it_on_your_heart_rachael_m_colby_belonging

Phone calls.

Angry words hurled in public places.

“Get a *?#*!#! abortion!” they said.

“No!” she said.

She would not take the life of her child.

“I’m coming over to visit and I’m bringing my camera,” I said. “I’ll take some pictures of you and the baby. It will be my gift to you.”

And there he stood, this giant, cradling the fragile frame of his infant daughter nestled contentedly in his arms.

Grace. Amazing grace.

“Tell him we need to cut the hospital band off; it’s getting too tight on her. He won’t let me take it off,” her mama said.

“Wait,” her daddy said. “Take a picture first. It shows we belong to each other.”

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. In Answer to the Question: How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell?

tattoo_it_on_your_heart_rachael_m_colby_how_can_a_loving_god_send_people_to_hell

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. II Peter 3:9 (NKJV)

Fernando Ortega – Come Ye Sinners

God does not send people to Hell. Hell is where we are all automatically destined for. God created hell for the devil and his angels, but when Adam disobeyed God and ate of the fruit in the Garden of Eden, sin entered him and since then, all mankind is born with a sin nature. God is Holy and cannot accept sin. God gave us a free will. We make reservations for our stay in eternity by the choices we make on Earth. Jesus, God incarnate, donned human flesh, and came to earth on the ultimate rescue mission. He dwelt among us, took our place on the cross and paid the price, so we could be free from the penalty of sin- death, Hell and separation  from God for eternity. God doesn’t send people to Hell; they choose to go there by refusing the escape provided.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

Companies, organizations and the military have standards they expect their employees to adhere to, or they will be disciplined or dismissed from their positions. When I purchase something, a meal, a car, equipment- I have expectations of it. If it does not meet them I am probably going to say something and ask for the problem to be fixed, or return the item. Our country has laws to govern us, and if we choose to break them there is a penalty. Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. It is every citizen’s responsibility to know the law and line themselves up with it.

Parents have boundaries for their children because they love them and want to protect and guide them. There are consequences for children if they disobey their parents’ rules. So why are some people surprised or offended, and question God because He has standards for us to live by and for entry into Heaven? Mankind tries to dictate what God’s standards should be; they try to fashion God into a god, who will pander to their own selfish, sinful desires.

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV)

God is love and He is gracious, but He is also perfectly holy, righteous, and just, and he couldn’t be any of these without established holy standards. The maker of something knows the purpose of his creation, how it runs best and how to fix it when it’s broken. Jesus is God, (John 1:1-4). He is our creator, (John 1:10-12). He cannot lie. He warned of Hell, but made a way for us to know Him and make Heaven our home.

…so it will be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! Matthew 13:36- 41 (NKJV)

The standard for entry into Heaven, if you are to earn your own way, is to be perfect- absolutely sinless and holy. The only one who qualifies as such is Jesus Christ.

As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; Romans 3:10 (NKJV)

So much for being a good person, or our good deeds outweighing our bad gaining us entry into Heaven. As the preacher said, “We are saved for good works, not by them.”

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)

Our culture today is striving to redefine right and wrong, and success and failure, by declaring everyone a winner; everyone gets a trophy, no one fails. Even if they miss the mark, and if they do fail- they still get promoted.

Love tells the truth and equips for the future. We do others no favor by not allowing them to reap consequences for shoddy work or wrongdoing.

Making excuses for bad behavior and giving sin a new title doesn’t change reality- sin is still sin.

Love lets others see their failure and offers a helping hand so they can overcome their weaknesses, strengthen their skills and learn how to get back up and go the right way.

God loves us. He has standards. He offers everything we need to thrive on Earth and in eternity. We can’t redefine God and his standards to fit our whims. He is God, and He defines Himself.

God has done everything to provide us with a way out. It is up to us to accept it.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17 (NKJV)

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (NKJV)

For those who choose Him, Jesus says, “I go to prepare a place for you.”

Suppose someone has a deadly disease and is terminally ill. The good news is there is one cure, but it is of no benefit to the stricken person if they do not receive it. It does not matter whether their reason for neglecting or rejecting the cure is them not believing it will work, wanting to try others’ methods or their own way, or it not being appealing or comfortable for them. Neither is their believing that it’s not their fault they contracted this disease from someone else an excuse for not taking the treatment. The fact that they inherited the disease does not make the disease any less deadly. They still need to seek and choose to receive the remedy for themselves before it is too late, or the disease will eventually have its way with them. For medicine to work effectively, the patient must also take the whole prescribed dose. Starting an antibiotic and not finishing the prescribed amount can result in relapse or the patient getting sicker than before. The visible effects and the progression of a terminal disease may be more pronounced in some than in others, but if untreated, the end result is the destruction of their body and eventually death.

Likewise, sin is an inherited disease of the soul and spirit-and it is terminal. Mankind inherited Adam’s sinful condition as a result of his disobedience in the Garden of Eden.

So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:18 (NASB)

Our sins, the wrong things we do,  are symptoms of our sinful nature. The prognosis is decay of the individual from the inside out. For a time it may seem to affect some more than others. Our sinful nature quarantines us from God and Heaven. Left untreated, our sin will lead to our eternal separation from God and torment of our soul in Hell.

The Bible tells us Hell is a literal place of everlasting punishment, torment, and fire, and I believe it. Matthew 18:8-9

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand,‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels… Matthew 25:41 (NKJV)

But I don’t believe the torment in Hell is invoked by a little horn headed guy with a pitchfork prodding people. I believe elements of the torment in Hell  include being eternally gripped by fear, with no peace and no escaping endless oppression from the spirits of condemnation, bitterness and hate. There is no hope in Hell; just darkness. It’s a place where the irrevocable fire of regret fuels an unquenchable thirst for everything Christ is, and offers to those who receive Him on this side of eternity. I believe the hardest thing to bear in Hell is the grief of realizing Jesus embodies everything, everyone ever wanted and needed, loving and desiring Him, but being eternally separated.

Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” John 8:24 (NKJV)

I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Luke 13:3 (NKJV)

God provided the only antidote for our sin- forgiveness through repentance and the acceptance of the shed blood of Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross as atonement for our sins. Jesus- the perfect sacrifice or scapegoat.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (NKJV)

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. II Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6 (NKJV)

“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:18 (NKJV)

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I John 5:12 (NKJV)

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (NKJV)

The ball is in your court. God loves you but he has given you a free will, and He will not violate it. What will you do with Jesus? Will you accept Him and His provision? Or will you reject Him and continue in pursuit of your own way? Will you give Jesus a chance to prove Himself, His love to you?

Questioning God’s love is indicative of not knowing Him as intimately as He wants you to. This is the greatest love story. God is love and when you truly know Him and His Word you won’t question His good intent for the beloved crown of His creation- us. Jesus isn’t just my fire escape- He’s my passion.

Love says, “Hey, you’re going the wrong way.”

Jesus says, “This is the way, walk in it.”

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV)

Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ John 3:7 (NKJV)

if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. John 5:24 (NASB)

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” I Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)

Good God

Everything that happens to us isn’t from God. When I am hurt by others’ sin, or bombarded by trials, I can choose to blame God, or navigate the storm with Him. When I stumble and reap the consequences, I can either make excuses, or take responsibility for my sin, repent, and let Jesus help me. I choose; bitter or better.

We live in a sin filled, fallen world. I have been through some deep waters. Everything is not as it ought to be, or as I wish in my life. Much of my circumstances are out of my control, but I can take comfort knowing nothing can happen that God doesn’t allow. God isn’t in Heaven saying, “Oh my God! I can’t believe this! Now what?” Life can blindside us, but nothing takes Him by surprise. He has a plan.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” ‭‭John‬ ‭16:33‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Notice, Jesus says, “…in Me you may have peace.” He is our refuge, our comfort. His peace is not contingent on circumstances; it is there for us when we hide our hearts in Him.

We use manure to enrich the soil. It nourishes plants so they flourish and bear fruit. God also uses the “manure” in our lives, the trials, in the same way, when we yield to Him. God works everything for our good and His glory in the end, when we get our hearts right and wait on Him.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”   Romans 8:28 NKJV

Lord,

When life is more valley than mountaintop

More potholes than open highway

More stormy sea than smooth sailing

I will

Cling to your promises

Cleave to your word.

I crave Your presence,

Lord.

“For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.”         ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭36:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I have found, it’s by way of the place called broken that I am mended. I am made whole as I place my battle weary, sin scarred heart in the hands of my Maker.

To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified. ‭ Isaiah‬ ‭61:3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This world is not my home. It’s just the road to where I’m going. Death is just the door to eternal life. Heaven is my home. I’m His ambassador on Earth, but a citizen of Heaven.

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:38-39‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Jesus is Not a Ball & Chain

Rachael_M_Colby_Tattoo_it_on_Your_Heart_Get_HappyDear Jay,

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a land far away, (really), I felt like you speak of in your brave and honest prize winning essay, “Jump.” I achieved what I set out to do, and the dreams I hadn’t yet attained were within reach. I eloped at eighteen years old. Most people skip town; I skipped the country. I had a houseful of new furniture, a 1965 Mustang, a modeling career underway and my eyes set on Europe. But I awoke many nights feeling weighted down, and like the wind could blow straight through me. Frustration and confusion badgered me, for in spite of all the things I filled my life with, I felt hollow. I wondered,  what is missing, why is happy so elusive?

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.   Ecclesiastes‬ ‭2:11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.   ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭2:17‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Then I lost everything.

Then Everything I was looking for found me, and I wasn’t empty anymore.

This is what I discovered:

Everything the world has to offer – Jesus = 0

He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.   ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭5:10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?”   Luke‬ ‭9:25‬ ‭NKJV

Nothing + a relationship with Jesus = Everything I need.

I am not perfect. Life is often fraught with trials. But Jesus is my firm foundation, a rock to stand on. He is my reference in the stormy seas of life, a safe harbor, my anchor.

Jesus is Not a Ball and Chain

Jesus is not a religious obligation to me; although I am obliged to Him. Knowing and spending time with Him is not a chore or another thing on my to do list. Serving Him, serving others is a privilege. His Word, His standards, are not cumbersome or chafing. I don’t view them as a bunch of rules of do’s and don’ts. Jesus is not a Kill Joy; but knowing Him will bring you joy. Certainly, God requires us to adhere to the standards set forth in His Word, or we will bear the natural consequences. But I know that what He has set in place is out of love and for our benefit. He is our creator and knows how we run best, and it’s in that light in which He has established His Word for us to live by. Jesus is not a ball and chain. He is my shelter.

You see, the burden is light when you are in love with Christ.

When we are lost

He is The Way

When we are broken

He is the restorer

For the sick in mind, body or soul

He is the healer

He is the light in the darkness

He is joy in the midst of sorrow

A clear sounding voice in the midst of confusion and turmoil

He is peace in the storm

He makes a way when there is none            Rachael_M_Colby_Tattoo_it_on_Your_Heart_Pursuing_Satisfaction

When we are empty

He is our true fulfillment

We are complete in Him.

If we miss God, we miss our purpose. Life without purpose is unfulfilling.  God gifts us with different talents and abilities, and has a plan for each of us. But he created us for the purpose of having a personal relationship with Him. I want all of Jesus and I want Him to have all of me. I want His plan for my life.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”   ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:13-16‬ ‭NLT‬

But we can’t say “I’ll have just a little Jesus on the side and I will run the rest of the show.” Life doesn’t work very well like that, and Jesus doesn’t work like that. It’s all or nothing. He will play second fiddle to no one, or anything in our lives. He wants to be our first love. Jesus calls you to Himself, just as you are.Yes, Jesus wants your worst. But He loves you too much to leave you that way.

Jesus said, “… I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”  ‭‭John‬ ‭10:10‬ ‭NKJV

“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭16:11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”   ‭‭John‬ ‭14:27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

You can know Him.  You can cast your cares, your sin, yourself, on Him.

“For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”   ‭‭John‬ ‭10:9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Knock, Knock

“Who’s there?”

“Jesus”

“Jesus who?”

That’s a problem if you said, “Jesus who?” It’s no joke. Jesus wants you to know Him. He wants a personal relationship with you.

I let Him in in 1987. It’s been quite a ride. I’m glad He’s driving. Life can be tough, whether you are a Christian or not. We can go through the muck and mire of life with or without Him. I chose with Him. We can rest assured when we rest in Him.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.     ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭23:4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”     ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

KNOCK, KNOCK.

“Who’s there”

“It’s Jesus. Let me in?”

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”     ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭3:20‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

What an invitation! To dine with The King; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And I get to walk with Him in between. Sometimes He carries me.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.  ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭23:2-3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

KNOCK, KNOCK.

“Who’s there?”

“Distraction, Fear, Doubt, Compromise, Selfishness, Willfulness, Love of Money, Greed, Lust, Pride, Anxiety, Anger, Unforgiveness…”

KNOCK, KNOCK.

“Who’s there?”

“Jesus.”

“Jesus? What are you doing out there? I already let you in.”

“You did. But I gradually got pushed out by all that other stuff you let in. Can I come in? I’d like to help you clean house.”

KNOCK, KNOCK…

(Let Him in)

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.     ‭‭I John‬ ‭4:18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”     Mark‬ ‭8:36‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.     ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.                    ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:15-16‬ ‭NLT‬‬
