Awake!

“I am weary. I’m tired of the fight! Must I engage in this one?” I inquired. “How did I even get here?”

“You don’t have to fight every battle,” a familiar voice said as they sidled up to me.

“Just rest awhile. It’s okay to step aside,” Apathy intoned, as he gently tugged at me. “Lie down and rest for a bit. Just close your eyes and pay no mind,” he crooned. I thought about standing, but I was comfortable where I lay. So I let Despondency settle over me like a warm blanket.

Up from the corners the Whisperers crept, drowsiness overcame me as I listened to their hypnotic chant. “It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t really matter.”

My eyes flew open, I staggered to my feet, and reached for my sword to silence the Whisperers. “But it does matter!” I declared. “It’s the little foxes that spoil the vine!” But why was I so weak?

A chuckle escaped the nebulous forms surrounding me. “See, you need to rest awhile. You don’t need to get involved in this. You can’t win this one anyway, so why weary yourself?”

But something inside me said, “Awake! Or you will die!” I fought to get past the Whisperers, but they pressed against me, the acrid air suffocating as I struggled to catch my breath. I tried to speak, but they covered my mouth.

I will not let them silence me, I vowed as I pried their icy hands off. “Where is my help?!” I hollered as I pushed back.

Suddenly, I broke free from their midst. “I can’t see clearly, everything is blurred!” I cried. Then I looked up, and the Warrior stood before me.

“I’ve been waiting for you for quite some time,” the Warrior said as He smiled at me. “Remember, I said you must return to me at morning and evening as I Am your source and you have no power of your own. You must not set your sword so far from you.”

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV)

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (Romans 8:37 NKJV)

My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. (Psalms 121:2 NKJV)

And yes, I’m aware I broke many writing rules with my above piece. Let’s just call it an allegorical poem written in paragraph form. 😉
